The verb ‘to sound’ means to dive down suddenly, usually referring to a fish or whale. In this instance a sinner, represented by a fish, is getting into deeper and deeper water or trouble. You can see his face becoming increasingly red with embarrassment the lower he gets . . . until he bottoms out, recognizes and admits his iniquity, and repents. Changing his course, he rises to the surface and into the light again, where he sees clearly, with glasses on! Now all appears golden to him, and others now see him as gold.
Quenames is the name of the area on Martha’s Vineyard where Walmsley happened to place the sinner sounding.
